The author uses many people comparing to McCandless. Although Ruess and McCandless both had desire to be in the wild, their causes were different. From the memories of McCandless parents and sister, Chris had shown different characters since he was really young. He admired his grandfather and he was really interested in being in the wild. He flouted his teacher's rules about writing articles. These phenomena showed that he was a different guy. If there had no issues between him and his family, I believe that he still would have been going to the wild. These issues happened between him and his family was only a excause for Chris to run away from his home. Probably he did exggerate these issues, but I guess he would still do that.

I sort of agree with you. I agree that he used his estrangement from his family as an excuse to go off on his own. He probably had a fight with his dad or something and then built off on the fact that his family was mean and used that to give this excuse of how he had to get away. He thought he had to get away and thought that no one would even care

I believe that he did have family issues at home considering his father had lied about his past relationships with him for his whole life, especially because Chris had to find out himself. Also, I think he was mad at his parents because they started spending money and buying things for themselves and all he wanted to do is give to other people. I don't think he agreed with some of what his family did. Chris didn't like the whole fact of "parents" no matter how good they were.
